When the availability of IVF on the NHS was restricted in 13 areas of England, Professor Winston joined Sirena Bergman and Evan Davis on Newsnight. When adoption was suggested as a solution, he replied that “people who are infertile suffer hugely” and “adoption is not a treatment for fertility”, noting there are at least a hundred causes of infertility. Asked whether he would cut the age threshold or the number of cycles, he said: “I would do IVF when it is really needed. At least half of the cycles are unnecessary. Secondly, I want to cost it properly.”

Following the decision to grant a licence for mitochondrial transfer, Robert spoke with Zeinab Badawi on BBC World’s HARDtalk. “We are not here to supplant the work of God,” he said. “We use our God-given intelligence to try to avert horrible diseases – that is very different from saying we want superhuman. Enhancing humans, in my view and most scientists’ views, is not a wise decision.”
