I am delighted to be introducing this conference, of huge interest to many new mums, dads and those who care for them. We ask: “What can happen to any person before birth?” What a baby experiences whilst still in the womb can be of great importance to health and wellbeing much later in life – even a microscopic embryo just three days after conception. These influences can affect growth, development and health before the mother can even know she is pregnant.

Our research shows that some quite common medical conditions may only present in middle age but have their genesis in the womb, including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and weak bones. Common conditions like childhood asthma and obesity – and possibly in some cases diabetes – may also be more likely with environmental changes.

Mental health problems in pregnancy and after birth affect at least one in every five women. The ill effects on later life following changes in the womb environment are frequently reversible – but we must recognise what is happening and understand the mechanisms. This Zoom webinar gathers a group of world experts, with plenty of time to put your questions to them. It is chaired by Professor Vivette Glover at Imperial College London and hosted by the Genesis Research Trust.

Robert was delighted to speak as part of the Hay Festival’s programme for schools. He spoke about two of his recent books, Ask a Scientist and Inventors, sharing his favourite science stories, answering tricky questions and explaining why science is so important in everyday life.

The Oundle, Peterborough and East Northants (OPEN) Learning Partnership hosted a Q&A with Professor Robert Winston. Over one thousand primary and secondary students took part, asking questions on topics as diverse as genetics, life in outer space, the workings of the brain and even what causes hiccups.

Robert thoroughly enjoyed being interviewed by five pupils from Frank Wise School in Banbury for the Oak National Academy assembly.

Robert spoke at the Norwich Science Festival on “What Makes Us Happy: Reading the Human Mind”, with a Q&A and book signing.

Robert spoke at Bath Children’s Literature Festival, Saffron Hall, Princes Theatre (Clacton), Sheffield Off the Shelf Festival, the Varma Lecture at St George’s Hospital, the Girls Schools Association Annual Conference, numerous Science Live events across the UK, a Round Table at Downing College Cambridge, and the Annual Phil Cusack Talk for Architects for Health.

Robert spoke at theatres including Langley Park (Beckenham), Beck Theatre (Hayes), Castle Theatre (Wellingborough), Camberley Theatre, Ely Cathedral, Harlequin Theatre (Redhill), Corn Exchange (Newbury), The Corn Hall (Diss), Wiltshire Music Centre, Palace Theatre (Newark) and Broxbourne.
